Port of Umeå as a green transport node-model in a pilot study to strengthen the Green Shipping Corridor between Umeå and Vaasa
A joint project will make the Port of Umeå a system demonstrator and forerunner with the aim of strengthening and extending the Green Shipping Corridors* initiated within the EU. - The work on shaping a Green Shipping Corridor between Umeå and Vaasa is currently underway. Through this project, we want to extend the corridor and accelerate the transition to fossil-free transport and operations. We hope to be able to show Umeå port as a good example of how to reduce emissions, push for environmentally friendly investments and support the Green Shipping Corridors, says Christer Nederstedt, Sales and Marketing Manager Kvarken Ports.

Wasaline launches Green Corridor Fridays
Wasaline will start operating with certified biogas one day a week from October 13, in preparation for the EU emissions trading system that will come into force next year. Biogas is more expensive than LNG (liquefied natural gas), the current primary fuel of M/S Aurora Botnia, but the company will cover the extra costs on behalf of its customers. With certified biogas, all Friday departures until Christmas will be climate neutral.

The port of Umeå has doubled the amount of railway transports in a year
The opening of a new railway terminal has fueled growth in the Port of Umeå. The amount of rail traffic has doubled in less than a year, and the interest towards this new transport mode is still growing.Port operator Kvarken Ports opened a new railway terminal in the Port of Umeå in 2022. The new terminal enables intermodal transports to pass through Umeå. In intermodal freight transport the goods stay in the same container or trailer unit while the transportation mode changes (e.g. from ship to train). The amount of railway traffic from the port doubled during the first year of operations.
