Stegra collaborates with the Port of Umeå – strengthens Umeå as a logistics hub

Kvarken Ports in Umeå has signed an agreement with Stegra regarding the possible reception, handling and storage of goods. The agreement strengthens Umeå's role as a logistics hub and is in line with the port's ongoing development for higher capacity.

The Port of Umeå's volumes have increased significantly over the past 10 years and forecasts point to continued steady growth. In order to be able to handle the increased flows of goods and contribute to the transformation of shipping, the port is in the midst of an extensive renovation and expansion with the Nordporten project. The port's operating permit has also been expanded, from the previous 3 million tons to 5 million tons.

The agreement with Stegra involves receiving, handling and, if necessary, shorter storage of steel scrap before it is transported by rail to Boden for the production of steel with up to 95 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional steel production. This will lead to a further increase in cargo volumes in the port.

– Umeå's importance as a logistics hub is growing. That is why we are renovating and expanding the Port of Umeå with new quays, larger areas and a fairway that is adapted for larger ships. The investments increase capacity and strengthen intermodal flows with a focus on safety, efficiency and service. Stegra choosing Umeå shows that our investments are at the right time, says Patrik Mattsson, CEO of Umeå Hamn AB and Kvarken Ports.

How Umeå Port is affected

In the upcoming solution, steel scrap is imported via Umeå Port, unloaded and transported by rail to Boden. Operations are planned to start in 2026. Umeå's large storage areas, intermodal connections and location at Kvarken make the port well suited for the assignment and interact with the ongoing expansion for future volumes.

- The opportunity we get in Port of Umeå strengthens our overall logistics solution and gives us increased flexibility and redundancy and complements our preferred flows through Luleå Port and our recently signed agreement with the Port of Skellefteå, says Jenny Marin, Logistics Manager at Stegra.
